Cats are subtle communicators. Decoding their happiness takes a little reading between the whiskers, but the signs are reliable once you know what to look for.
1. Slow blinks
The infamous “cat kiss.” When your cat looks at you and slowly closes their eyes, they’re telling you they feel safe. Try slow-blinking back — many cats reciprocate.
2. Tail held high (with a small curl at the tip)
An upright tail with a soft hook is a classic confidence signal. Combined with relaxed ears, it means “all is well.”
3. Kneading
That paw-pumping motion (sometimes accompanied by drooling) is a leftover kitten reflex tied to nursing. If your adult cat kneads you, you’re officially family.
4. Belly exposure
This one’s tricky — many cats expose their belly as a sign of trust but don’t actually want belly rubs. Take it as a compliment, but go for chin scratches instead.
5. Grooming you
Licking your hand or hair is a deep social behaviour. In cat language, it’s the equivalent of saying “you’re part of my colony.”
