Bringing home a hamster is exciting — and a little daunting. Here’s exactly how to set up the first seven days for a stress-free start.
Day 1-2: Let them settle
Resist the urge to handle. Place the cage in a quiet area, fill water and food, and just talk softly nearby so they get used to your voice.
Day 3-4: Hand-feeding
Offer a sunflower seed or piece of dried fruit through the cage bars. Don’t reach in yet — let them come to your hand.
Day 5-6: Calm contact
Slowly place your hand inside, palm up, with a treat. If they climb on, gently lift them just a few inches above the bedding for a minute or two.
Day 7: First lap session
Sit on the floor (so they can’t fall far) and let them explore your hands and lap. Keep sessions to 10-15 minutes for the first week.
The right setup matters
A roomy multi-level cage, dust-extracted bedding, untreated chew toys, and a solid wheel are non-negotiable. Cheaper cages with vertical bars too narrow can cause stress and even injury.
